Cannot use my username on my repository name for README #192230

Check if you recently changed usernames; if so, wait a bit and try again, or temporarily change to another username, create the repo, then switch back. If it still fails, open a ticket at GitHub Support and tell them you’re trying to create your profile README repo and see the “has been retired and cannot be reused” error. |

Hi Yossi! This error usually happens for one of two reasons. Here is how you can fix it:
If you are trying to name it something like "README" or "Profile," GitHub might throw an error because those aren't the correct names for the "Special Repository" feature.
The Fix: Try waiting 24 hours for the namespace to clear. Alternative: Check if you have any "Archived" repositories with that name in your settings and delete them permanently.
Steps to try right now: Go to github.com/new. Type Yossi-Batash in the Repository Name box. Make sure it is set to Public. Check the box that says "Initialize this repository with a README." If it still says "Retired," you may need to contact GitHub Support, as your specific username might have a unique naming restriction on their backend. |
